Youth held over sex attack on 14-year-old

AN underage youth has been questioned by Limerick gardaí in connection with a serious sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl.

The assault happened at the weekend and the girl was subsequently brought to the sexual assault unit at Cork’s South Infirmary.

A garda spokesman at Henry Street station said: “We have received a complaint and an allegation of sexual assault. There is an investigation under way. The allegation is very serious and it is a sensitive issue involving a girl of 14.”

It is believed the girl was invited to a house party last Saturday night.

The girl is believed to have said that she was sexually assaulted in the house late in the night.

Gardaí were alerted to the matter by the girl’s parents who found her in a distressed state when she returned home.

Gardaí have spoken to a youth currently being held in a juvenile detention centre. He was arrested in Limerick on Monday in relation to a separate incident.

Meanwhile, gardaí are still continuing their investigation into two attempted rapes at the University of Limerick campus in Plassey last week.

Two female students were attacked by a man in his 20s. Both managed to flee their attacker.

The students union at the college has urged students to take extra precautions when walking alone on the campus at night time.

It has advised students to carry personal attack alarms which are now available on campus.
