Club in postcard bid to save pool
Sunday’s Well Swimming Club, whose members train at the council’s financially troubled Gus Healy Pool in Douglas, has printed hundreds of postcards addressed to politicians such as Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, Tánaiste Mary Harney and Enterprise Minister Micheál Martin.
The cards will also be sent to opposition leaders Pat Rabbitte and Enda Kenny. Local politicians will also be targeted. Members began posting the first of over 400 cards yesterday. On one side, the postcards have a picture of club members using the pool, with the question: “Are you aware of the current dilemma facing the Gus Healy Pool in Douglas Cork?”
On the other side, the card reads: “This is the last remaining functional 25-metre municipal pool in Cork city. We are now calling on you to secure funding at central Government level to secure the future of this public pool.”
The future of the pool is still in doubt following a council decision last month to rule out a public-private approach which was on offer to redevelop the facility.
