A LEADING US neo-Nazi leader wanted by the FBI is believed to be on the run in Ireland.

Neo-Nazi may be hiding in Ireland

Vincent Bertollini, a multi-millionaire who has used his wealth to promote anti-Semitic and white supremacist groups may be hiding in the Republic, according to FBI agents.

Detectives in Seattle recently uncovered material which indicated Bertollini has been using a contact address in Dublin city centre.

The 65-year-old Californian has been a fugitive since 2001 when he faced the possibility of going to prison after being arrested for drink driving for the third time in two years. Such a repeat offence constitutes a felony under US law.

However, he is now the focus of an international manhunt since being declared a federal fugitive after fleeing his home in Sandpoint, Idaho, four years ago.

The self-declared evangelist boasted in 1998 that his own organisation, the 11th Hour Remnant Messenger, which still operates an active website, had spent over $1.5m on literature to promote anti-Jewish sentiments.

Despite other reports that he has been hiding in Costa Rica and the Virgin Islands, FBI investigators believe it is likely that he is in Ireland.

Bertollini is also known to use the names Richard Bert and Vincent Bert as aliases.

Last night, a garda spokesperson said the Irish authorities were often asked by other police bodies to assist in tracing individuals either directly or through Interpol. He was unable to comment on the Bertollini case. However, it is understood nobody matching Bertollini’s description has been arrested within the Republic.
