Pathologists warn fees not covered by VHI

A ROW over money has erupted between the VHI and pathologists at a private hospital in Cork.

Pathologists warn fees not covered by VHI

The Bon Secours Pathologists Group has written to patients advising them that VHI Healthcare no longer fully covers pathology fees in the hospital. However, the pathologists state that they continue to operate a full cover scheme with other medical insurance companies, such as BUPA, which has its Irish headquarters in Fermoy.

Tests carried out at the pathology department often include blood, urine, phlegm swabs and biopsies.

The pathologists say these are an essential part of the investigation and treatment of many conditions which are interpreted by consultants who then give advice to other medical experts about further investigation and treatment.

Pathologists at the hospital, which deals with around 18,000 admissions and 29,000 outpatients each year, are advising patients that when discharged an itemised bill will be sent to them.

And although they say it is difficult to estimate the charge per patient, the bills for the majority of those admitted to the hospital will range from €75 to €250.

In a letter given to patients, it is highlighted that they, and not VHI Healthcare, will be responsible for settling the account.

The pathologists point out that reimbursement may be sought from VHI and once this has been received - which they say may take a number of weeks - the money will be refunded. It is also suggested that some of the shortfall may be claimed against income tax by using the MEDI income tax form.

A number of patients who have been billed by consultants say they will not pay the extra charges.

One man whose wife has been getting the bills says that he will not pay up. But for fear of his wife being refused treatment, he asked not to be named.

A VHI spokeswoman said 99% of the country’s consultants participate in what is known as the VHI Healthcare Full Cover Scheme.

“These consultants receive an agreed benefit and agree not to balance bill the patient. Only 1% of all consultants in the country are not participating in this agreement,” she said.

The spokeswoman confirmed that the Pathologists Group in the Bons Secours in Cork are not participating in the scheme.

“These consultants receive a standard benefit from VHI Healthcare and they may, or may not, charge an additional amount to the patient.”

The parent company of the 343-bed Bons Secours reported a 10%, or €7.4 million rise in profits last year.
