INCREASINGLY violent Irish cities were yesterday compared by the head of the parole board to “Chicago in the ‘20s and ‘30s”.

Gordon Holmes said stern measures had to be taken to stamp out lawlessness caused by gun crime and the illegal drugs’ trade.

He backed Government plans for mandatory minimum sentences for gun offences and for a clampdown on drugs in prisons.
