Call for new laws to combat rise in racism

A STATE advisory body is seeking the introduction of new laws, including a “hate crime” to combat an upsurge in racist incidents.

The National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) was particularly critical of the racist attitudes of some taxi drivers and some garda immigration officers.

The anti-racism watchdog also highlighted “consistent reports” of prejudice and rudeness towards foreign nationals by some garda immigration officers.
