CHILDREN seeking asylum in Ireland are not getting a proper education because of inadequate facilities and lack of basic information, research has found.

The survey of more than 150 children seeking asylum found 18% had difficulties reading in their first or another language and 21% had difficulties writing.

The research, carried out for three Dublin Vocational Education Committees (VECs), is included in a pilot framework for educational provision for bilingual learners, including asylum seekers and refugees, published yesterday by the Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA).
