Strike averted as ASTI backs scheme

THE prospect of school closures and strikes was averted last night when members of the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland (ASTI) agreed to go ahead with implementation of the supervision and substitution scheme.

But the thorny issue could haunt secondary schools for some time as management of schools wants non-teaching staff to continue the work until the issue is clarified.

The 17,000-member standing committee of ASTI decided yesterday it cannot allow members to go unpaid for being available for this work.
