LABOUR Party president Proinsias de Rossa is set to step down from his position to prevent a split developing in the party ranks.

Reports of disgruntlement among a small number of party members emerged following the leadership election at the weekend.

The top three posts in the party are now held by former Democratic Left members following the election of Pat Rabbitte as party leader and Liz McManus as deputy leader. Along with Mr de Rossa, the pair joined Labour following the merger in 1998.
