Woman killed in four-car collision
The smash, which killed one woman and injured eight other people, followed the carnage on Tuesday when three were killed in an accident on the Dublin to Belfast road in Co Louth.
The dead woman, 77, and from Newry, had just returned from holiday and was being driven home with a friend. The crash occurred just before 9am, two miles north of Newry at Tinker’s Hill, where the dual-carriageway reduces to a single lane in each direction.
The dead woman was a rear seat passenger in a green Nissan Primera. Her friend, who was also in the back seat, and a third passenger were injured. Their condition was described as stable yesterday. The driver of the car was seriously injured.
The four were among nine people taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry.
The driver of the Nissan was later transferred to Belfast. A couple and two children were injured but were said to be in a satisfactory condition. They were in a white Peugeot car heading in the same direction as the Nissan. One of the children, an 11-week-old baby, was kept in for observation.
Another man, who was in a blue Landrover was also injured. The driver of a fourth vehicle was uninjured.
