School management tight-lipped as staff member suspended

MANAGEMENT at the all-Irish Model School in Limerick remained tight-lipped yesterday over the suspension of a senior staff member.

School management tight-lipped as staff member suspended

When principal Diarmuid Ó Murchu was contacted yesterday he refused to comment on the matter.

It is believed that after an incident involving members of staff, the board of management was called on to investigate the matter.

That investigation is ongoing and a member of the teaching staff has been given what is termed ‘administrative leave’ by the board of management.

The board of management has decided that no public comment will be made.

However, a number of parents have voiced their concern at the suspension of the teacher.

One unconfirmed report said that the matter has resulted from a clash of opinion between members of staff.

It is believed that members of staff are being interviewed as part of the investigation which is being carried out by the board of management. One source said: “There may be an issue in the school and one person has been suspended.”

Some parents organised a petition during the week which was signed by some in support of the suspended teacher.

However, most parents are mystified as to what is going on.

One parent said yesterday: “I just heard about it. “The teacher has been away for the past few days, but I thought nothing about it.

“The teacher is very highly thought of by parents.”

Another parent said: “People have said something about it but nobody outside the school seems to know.”

The Model School is one of the oldest all-Irish schools in the country. It switched from using English as the language of tuition to Irish in 1930.

The school has 550 boys and girls on its rolls from infants to sixth class.

The school was destroyed by fire in the 1980s and had to be totally rebuilt.

Children from all over Limerick City attend the school, which has a very good reputation.
