Refugees to be stopped from claiming allowance

THE Government hopes to save substantial amounts of money under a new law that will prevent asylum seekers from claiming rental allowance.

This means applicants will not be able to stay in private accommodation and will effectively be confined to the direct provision scheme.

But the new law, which was officially outlined yesterday, has sparked controversy as refugee groups say the direct provision system is woefully inadequate.
