Gardaí appeal for public’s help with investigation into two rapes
The alleged attack on Watercourse Road late on Tuesday night followed a brutal assault on an Australian visitor on the Western Road in the early hours of the same day.
The latest sexual assault is believed to have been carried out by a man in his 30s who may have been following his victim.
The woman in her mid-20s was walking from a friend’s house through Blackpool towards the city centre when she was attacked between 11.30pm and 12pm.
Detectives in the Mayfield district are anxious to speak with anybody who saw anything suspicious in the city end area of Watercourse Road.
“We are treating this as very serious and any assistance from the public would be appreciated,” a garda spokesman said. He asked anybody with information that might help the investigation to ring Watercourse Road station at (021) 4501498.
Meanwhile, gardaí have issued a description of the man who raped an Australian woman in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
He is in his mid-20s, clean shaven with light-coloured hair and speaks with an Irish accent.
Inquiries have been continuing in the area where the attack took place and also in the Washington Street pub where the victim met her assailant on Monday night.
He was walking her to her accommodation when he dragged the tourist into the front garden of a UCC property on Western Road.
The woman’s horrific ordeal is believed to have begun at around 12.30am and lasted up to half an hour.
Superintendent Kieran McGann said detectives are still anxious to hear from a person they believe partly disturbed the attack.
The victim was aware somebody happened upon the scene but her ordeal continued again after.
Anybody with information should contact gardaí at the Bridewell station on (021) 4270681.
