Gloria Adewloe, who comes from Nigeria, had to paint over the graffiti yesterday, some of which said “Hitler was right”, “Kill Niggers” and “Burn Niggers Out”.

“They are telling us to go. If they (whoever did it) weren’t racist they wouldn’t be doing it. I would tell them please stop,” Ms Adewloe said.

She runs the shop along with her husband, Kehinde.

Ms Adewloe said in the past three months her clothes shop at Coburg Street in Cork city, had been targeted three times and she had reported the incidents to local gardaí.

“It’s upsetting but there is nothing I can really do about it,” she said. The incident is believed to have happened last Sunday night.

Progressive Democrats Senator John Minihan condemned it, saying: “As Cork prepares to assume the mantle of European City of Culture, and embrace diversity, this type of action is upsetting for all involved.

“To allow this to go without speaking out could be interpreted as tacit acceptance,” he said.

Lord Mayor of Cork Seán Martin said he too condemned the acts and described them as totally unacceptable.
