McDowell to review prison committee system

JUSTICE MINISTER Michael McDowell is to review the controversial prison visiting committee system.

The move was welcomed by penal reformers who have consistently criticised the committees as an ineffective 'gravy train' for politicians.

Mr McDowell said he intended to coordinate the operation of the committees with the work of the recently established independent Inspector of Prisons and Places of Detention.
