Drop in jobless figures greater than expected

THE drop in the number of people on the live unemployment register in September represented the largest monthly decrease in three years.

More than 15,000 signed off on all forms of unemployment assistance and benefit during the month.

While the decrease could mostly be attributed to students who received assistance during the summer returning to schools and colleges, the drop was still greater than expected.
