SMOKING is to be banned in pubs, nightclubs and restaurants by the Government under tough regulations to be announced today.

The clampdown is part of a blanket ban on smoking in all workplaces and is aimed at protecting workers from the effects of passive smoking.

This morning Health Minister Micheál Martin will announce details of draft regulations at the publication of an expert group's report into the effects of passive smoking in the workplace.
