Death of man run over by his wife to be investigated

GARDAÍ are investigating the circumstances of what appears to have been a tragic accident in which a man died after being hit by a car outside his home in the Midlands.

Detectives are attempting to establish how Eddie Glenn fell under the car, which was being driven by his wife at the time.

Mr Glenn died in hospital following the incident, which happened at 4am outside his house in Monksland estate in the west side of Athlone.

Gardaí said they were called to the house following reports of a disturbance. The 42-year-old was found lying on the ground with serious injuries.

This is the second family tragedy Diane Glenn has suffered. Her 46-year-old brother Anthony Kirwan died after being hit by a car as he walked along the Athlone bypass in December 1996.

Neighbours on the estate spoke warmly about the couple. “They were genuinely nice, kept to themselves and were always seen out walking together,” said one local.

A garda forensic team travelled to Athlone to examine the scene, which was preserved, while the Deputy State Pathologist Marie Cassidy carried out a post-mortem on the body yesterday afternoon at Ballinasoe hospital.

Gardaí confirmed the man died after being hit by a car.

“The focus is the establish whether there was foul play. We need to establish to the best of our ability the sequence of events.

“We do not have any preconceptions and will be looking at it, if you like, in a cold, technical way to ensure we have the fullest picture possible,” said one investigating garda.
