There were mixed feelings within the Lisburn army HQ about how to solve the “problem” in the North, with some believing it was time those on the other side of the border received something similar to what was happening in Belfast and elsewhere.

But Mr Wallace said: “The loss of life was so great that it was a major talking point with us. The vast majority of us were outraged.”
