A FRESH appeal has been made to the mother of a baby girl abandoned outside a hospital to come forward.

Fresh appeal for mother of baby Sophia to call gardaí

Gardaí in Cork said they will treat the mother of baby Sophia in a caring and sympathetic way.

Sophia was left in the grounds of the South Infirmary Hospital in October.

A woman, thought to be her mother, placed the baby on the boot of a car on October 13.

Sophia was just three days old when she was left in a blue holdall in the grounds of the hospital.

Foster parents are now caring for her. Gardaí have been trying to trace baby Sophia’s mother without success.

They have examined closed-circuit TV footage from the hospital, which shows a woman entering the car park with the bag on her shoulder and leaving shortly afterwards without it.

Gardaí say it is not possible to identify the woman from the security footage but she is said to be 5’4” to 5’8”, of slim build and wearing a grey track-suit top with grey or blue slacks.

They have again appealed to baby Sophia’s mother to contact them so that they can be re-united, or to allow her to have an input into the baby’s long-term care.

The Gardaí at Cork’s Anglesea Street Station can be contacted on 021-4522022.
