Case against plastic surgeon may take years
Irish-born lawyer Thomas Moore has lodged a multi-million law suit with the New York Supreme Court alleging negligence against Dr Michael Sachs.
Ms Cregan’s anaesthetist, Dr Madhavrao Subbarao has also been named in the proceedings.
A spokeswoman for Mr Moore’s firm said yesterday: “This is just the start and there could be years in between.”
She said they were not allowed disclose the sum of money stated in medical malpractice papers. If the case goes to trial, it will be heard by a jury which will fix damages if they decide against the defendants.
Dr Sachs, nicknamed Dr Botch, is still practicing at his Manhattan clinic even though he has been involved in over 30 malpractice cases since 1995. He has been ordered not to carry out certain complex surgical procedures unless supervised by another physician.
Ms Cregan, aged 42, suffered a heart attack on March 15 last, the morning after her face lift and nose operation at Dr Sachs’s clinic. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was taken off a life support machine on March 17 and pronounced dead.
Mr Moore said he was convinced Ms Cregan’s husband Liam who lives at the family home in Croom, had a strong case.
“She was abandoned by her surgeon, abandoned by the anaesthetist and left in the hands of a lowly nurse. Those who should have been caring for her, one after the other, dropped the ball. I know from the records that Kay suffered internal bleeding and finally just arrested. It could have been prevented if she had received appropriate care.”
Only seven other doctors in the US have made more malpractice payments than Dr Sachs - and four of these have been struck off.
Dr Sachs’s lawyer has claimed Ms Cregan, a mother of two young boys, suffered from an irregular, undiagnosed heart beat.
This claim has been rubbished by Mr Moore.
