Art holiday appeals to families

EXECUTED to a fine art, family-focused treats at the National Gallery of Ireland remain one of the great traditions of Christmas in Dublin.

Art holiday appeals to families

Despite the increasing number of festive attractions in the capital, the annual Christmas Family Art Holiday at the national gallery continues to appeal to hundreds of people.

“Whatever we organise at the gallery always enjoys a strong response from the public,” said keeper and head of education Marie Bourke. “In the early days, we would have handled thousands of people daily over the Christmas period. We might not have the same large numbers due to other major events, but the art holiday at the gallery remains part and parcel of the Christmas programme in the city.”

Formerly known as the children’s art holiday, the event is now in its 39th year. In 2000, it was revamped to facilitate children and grown-ups. Ms Bourke said: “The art holiday not only has an educational value but also has a strong entertainment appeal for all the family.”
