Delegates hit out at State Irish policies

THE Government is failing in its duties to promote and develop Irish in the education system, third-level students claimed yesterday.

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) annual congress passed a number of motions seeking the protection of the language, including a demand that gardaí be required to attain a certain fluency before qualifying.

Ciarán Mac Fhearghusa, USI’s Irish language officer, suggested it is easier to start up a Gaelscoil in the North than in the Republic.
