WITH the way clear for a Labour/Fine Gael election pact, Fianna Fáil last night sought to drive a wedge between the parties by focusing on the differences between them.

As Labour’s national conference in Tralee overwhelmingly endorsed the leadership proposal to negotiate a pre-election pact Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism John O’Donoghue accused Pat Rabbitte of being “utterly cynical and dishonest” in his keynote speech on Saturday.

Pointing to issues of conflict between the parties, such as neutrality and Aer Lingus, Mr O’Donoghue said the proposed alternative Government would “be so unstable and so disparate that it would soon destroy the successful economy we now have”.
