GARDA sergeants and inspectors yesterday came out strongly against any move to centralise the force, close stations or reduce opening hours.

Justice Minister Michael McDowell has been considering a management report which recommends reductions in the opening hours of stations, the closure of some and the axing of five districts and one region.

Details of the report on the garda structures and organisation have been seen by the various representative bodies, who have been told they will be consulted if it is decided to introduce any or all of the recommendations.
