THE TAXMAN’s crackdown on 30,000 bogus non-resident bank account holders has sent shock waves throughout the country.

With letters from the Revenue Commissioners in the post, a lobby group for the account holders said its phones were “hopping” yesterday with worried callers.

“People are very anxious about this,” said Conor O’Mahony, spokesperson for the Reaction Group for Non-Resident Account Holders. “A lot of them did know about the accounts but others were never informed by the bank or by their former spouses.”
