College hopefuls urged not to panic
Some 65,794 people have applied for college places through the Central Applications Office (CAO) and they will learn tomorrow if they have been successful.
The CAO is posting the college offers today and offers will be on the CAO website (www.cao.ie) from 6am tomorrow.
The president of the National Parents Council (NPC) Eleanor Petrie said students must remain calm if they fail to get the course they want.
"It's important to take a deep breath and remember that this is not the end of the world. It's only a milestone in life and never panic because there's something out there for everyone," she said.
Ms Petrie said students had a number of days to consider their next move and she warned them not to decided too quickly.
"People should talk to someone who has a detailed knowledge of the system and it's always good to seek the advice of a guidance counsellor," she said.
College hopefuls may still get their preferred course in the second round of offers next month, Ms Petrie said.
Career consultant Roisin Kelleher said students should thoroughly research any course they are offered.
"Unfortunately some students mark down several courses on the CAO form as an afterthought. When this happens they should get as much information as possible before deciding what to do," she said.
The former Institute of Guidance Counsellors' president said there were options for students unable to get into a university.
"Post Leaving Certificate courses allow many people to gain entry to college later on. People have to realise that it doesn't matter where you start in the system," Ms Kelleher said.
Guidance experts also called on students to take care with the paper work when accepting an offer.
"All the forms have to be filled in correctly. Even if students are away they must take responsibility for this and ensure it's done right," Ms Kelleher said.
Offers must be accepted by 5.15pm on Wednesday, August 27. The second round of offers will reach CAO applicants on Tuesday, September 2.
The guidance counsellor helpline number is 1800 265 165. It is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The Irish Examiner will publish a special supplement on Tuesday with advice on the CAO process, going to college and accommodation.
