Moves on early release for sex offenders

CONVICTED sex offenders could be released early under new plans, if they agree to take part in treatment programmes in prison.

Justice Minister Michael McDowell said new legal provisions would provide an incentive to sex offenders to engage in rehabilitation programmes.

The move follows concern that sex offenders were not taking up therapeutic programmes in prison and were being released back into society untreated.
