LEGISLATION to legalise the use of electronic voting was yesterday branded as unconstitutional and inadequate.

During a heated Dáil argument, opposition parties also criticised the lack of time available to examine the proposed legislation, which was published yesterday by Environment Minister Martin Cullen.

Objecting to the fact that the bill would begin passing through the Oireachtas next Wednesday, Labour environment spokesman Eamon Gilmore accused PD leader Tánaiste Mary Harney of allowing Fianna Fáil to "turn this country into a banana republic".
