MARTIN CULLEN’S home patch of Waterford city benefited from an astonishing six-fold increase in Department of the Environment local roads funding — far ahead of anywhere else in the country.

Waterford City Council’s local roads allocation of €10.6 million this year is a 556% increase upon 1999, according to Fianna Fáil briefing notes for use by party candidates and canvassers on the doorsteps.

Yet by contrast, the documentation shows Galway City Council’s allocation has dropped by 27% to just €1.8m within the same time period.
