FOUR people died in weekend road accidents, bringing the number killed on Irish roads so far this year to 253.

At 8.30am yesterday a 39-year-old non-national was killed when he lost control of the car he was driving and ploughed into a concrete pier.

Mr Jose Kiaku died after the crash at Ballyrath, Navan, Co Meath. He was the only occupant of the car.

Gardaí said Mr Kiaku had been staying in a house in the North Circular Road, Dublin.

Two young drivers were killed when their vehicles were involved in a head-on collision in Tullamore, Co Offaly early on Saturday. James Molyneaux, 21, and Oliver Byrne, 26, died when their vehicles collided near Coolnahiley at 12.15am.

Mr Molyneaux was from Tullamore while Mr Byrne came from Moate, Co Westmeath.

In a separate accident, a 23-year-old motorcyclist died after colliding with a car at Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan.

The accident happened on the main Carrickmacross-Ardee road at 12.30pm on Saturday. The dead man was named as John Carroll from Reaghstown, Ardee, Co Louth.

Meanwhile, a 12-year-old girl who was knocked down while cycling her bicycle on August 5 died in Beaumont Hospital on Friday.

Michaela Smith from Creighan, Co Cavan had been on life support since the accident.
