Soya baby formula recalled over steel traces in powder

A POPULAR baby food for dairy-intolerant children has been recalled after pieces of metal were found in the formula.

Traces of stainless steel have already been discovered in four cans of SMA Wysoy, manufactured by SMA Nutrition.

Yesterday, the company decided to recall all 860g cans of the soya infant formula which have the best before date 28/08/2006.

SMA Nutrition said it had isolated the cause of the contamination and there were no safety implications.

Nonetheless, mothers have been asked to check the best before dates on all 860g cans of the formula.

Soya formula is mainly given to babies who are intolerant to cows' milk.

The food is also popular among parents who regard soya-based products as being healthier than dairy.

"We have identified the cause of the metal pieces in these cans and have taken appropriate action to prevent any recurrence. The metal pieces in question would be readily seen when making up the formula.

"However, in the unlikely event of ingestion, medical advice is that the pieces in question would be harmless and would pass straight through the gastrointestinal tract," a spokesperson for the company said.

Any parent discovering an affected can should contact the SMA Careline on: Freephone 1800-409446.
