CHRISTIAN Churches in Ireland have suffered because of a lack of ecumenism and largely have themselves to blame for losing touch with society, Church of Ireland primate Most Rev Robin Eames said last night.

The Archbishop of Armagh told the McGill Summer School in Donegal that Christianity is greater than any one Church, but can too easily become less significant or meaningful when linked with any one tradition.

“Christianity in Ireland has suffered because of our total allegiance to denominationalism. In the naked sectarianism of Northern Ireland, ecumenism for some is a sign of failure, surrender and weakness,” Archbishop Eames said.
