Students may sit first exams as early as May

STUDENTS doing the Leaving and Junior Certificate in 2007 could be taking their first written exams as early as May.

The State Examinations Commission (SEC) is continuing talks with teacher unions, the Department of Education, school managers and parents on proposed measures to ease pressure on candidates.

Early proposals include holding the first papers in English and Irish a few weeks earlier than usual.
