Experts bid to ensure safety of goalposts

EXPERTS have started work to ensure goalposts on the country’s pitches meet recognised safety standards.

Goalpost accidents have claimed the lives of four children in recent years, Minister of State Michael Ahern recalled yesterday.

A survey by the State Claims Agency in May 2003 found many of the goalpost frames used by community and comprehensive schools were unsafe because they were improperly designed, manufactured or installed. The survey also found nearly all the goalpost frames were made locally and to no particular standard.
