Compensation fund for taxi drivers a ‘disgrace’

THE compensation fund for taxi operators hit by deregulation was branded a ‘disgrace’ yesterday by the National Union of Taxi Drivers.

At the launch of two reports into the effects of deregulation on the industry worldwide, the vice-president of the association, Vinnie Kearns, described the Government compensation fund of €15million as woefully inadequate.

“There are 3,900 people affected by this decision. Half of them will receive some kind of compensation under the scheme but it doesn’t go nearly far enough,” said Mr Kearns.
