Garda files for DPP on organised illegal dumping

GARDA files on organised illegal dumping operations are to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions next month in what could produce the first criminal prosecution of its kind in Ireland.

Five major unlicensed landfill sites have been under investigation for the last eight months and a number of landowners, haulage contractors and other people have been interviewed.

If prosecutions proceed to a guilty verdict, the main suspects could face up to 10 years in prison.
