WATERFORD has been recognised for its drive to protect the environment by being presented with a coveted national award.

Waterford presented with public service award

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is among the many to publicly recognise Waterford county council’s ‘Best Practice Recycling’ by presenting the local authority with a Public Service Excellence Award.

The award, which recognised the council’s contribution to ‘Best Practice Recycling’, was accepted by Waterford County Mayor, Ger Barron, on behalf of the local authority.

Particular recognition was given to the initiative and innovation involved in setting up and operating the South East Materials Recovery Facility, in Dungarvan. Waterford county council is the only local authority in the country to own and operate such a facility.

The MRF plant, which opened in January 2005, currently employs 14 people and accepts dry recyclable waste from the South East region.

The Public Service Excellence Awards are held every two years.
