Crisis-hit nursing home using petty cash for supplies

And some members of staff at SpringValley nursing home in Enniscorthy haven’t been paid for five weeks because of the crisis at the 50-bed home. The South Eastern Health Board (SEHB) has been asked to take over the private nursing home, which has been put on the market.

Top officials at the SEHB are still in negotiations with the owners of the home in a bid to keep it open and avoid disrupting the lives of the 32 elderly, sick and handicapped people in care there. They range from a 32-year-old who is profoundly mentally handicapped to a 97-year-old. The home, which is one of the largest in the country, ran into financial difficulties about three weeks ago and staff have not been paid since May 3. Their only hope is that the health board will take over and run the facility.
