U2’s Sgt Pepper released
A recording of the opening number on stage at London’s Hyde Park this afternoon was to go on sale one hour after the performance.
The recording of the Beatles hit performed by U2 lead singer Bono and former Beatles star Sir Paul McCartney was released globally for sale by Universal Music Group as a digital download on more than 200 websites. Proceeds from the sales were to go to Live 8.
It is understood the performance of ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ by two of the world’s most legendary musicians is the fastest online release after a major music event and could possibly set a Guinness World Record.
The recording of the performance could be purchased only as a download, not in its physical form.
The Live 8 version of the song was transmitted by satellite to the BBC Television Centre in London and relayed to UK broadcaster Capital Radio.
A recording was captured at Capital Radio for Universal Music, which prepared the track for delivery to online retailers worldwide.
