Spanish make appeal over Irishman’s mystery death

Daniel O’Callaghan, from Rathmines in south Dublin, died more than two weeks after he was found seriously injured outside an apartment block in the Playa del Ingles resort on Gran Canaria.

Gardaí have been asked by Spanish police to assist in attempting to solve the mystery of the 21-year-old’s death.

It is believed Daniel was the victim of an assault but no suspects have been identified.

The fresh appeal is directed at Irish holiday-makers or transient workers who were in the resort over the summer.

Daniel and three friends arrived in Gran Canaria on Saturday, April 26. They left their bags in the apartment and then went out for something to eat before visiting a number of bars in the area. At about 2.30am, Daniel O’Callaghan left his friends.

Spanish police have been unable to establish where he went between that time and when he was found unconscious at 4am in a laneway between the Greenfield and Green Garden Apartments.

He suffered serious head injuries and died as a result of these on May 13 in hospital in Gran Canaria.

Investigating officers want to hear from anyone who saw Daniel and his friends on the night, or from anyone who saw or heard any activity in the laneway between 3am and 4am, and anyone who believe they saw Daniel between 2.30am and 4am.

They are also appealing to anyone who may have any other further information about Daniel’s death to contact gardaí.

There would have been a lot of Irish people on holiday in the area at that time and also young Irish people working in the area for the summer months, a Garda spokesman said.
