Commercial explosives and rockets found in gardaí raids

DEADLY explosives found during a major garda operation in Limerick yesterday are believed to have been brought to the city for use in the bloody, ongoing feud.

Commercial explosives and rockets found in gardaí raids

Three-quarters of a kilo of commercial explosives were found at the rear of a house in Ballinacurra Weston in a raid by gardaí under Supt David Sheehan from Roxboro station and Supt Gerry Mahon, from Henry Street station.

Also found were a sawn-off shotgun and cocaine with a street value of €80,000.

A man arrested at the house was being held last night under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. “We are very happy with the results of this operation. I would hate to think at the devastation that this amount of explosive could cause,” Supt Sheehan said.

Army bomb disposal experts from Cork took possession of the explosives for disposal.

This is the second time explosives brought to Limerick by feuding gangs have been found.

Last year a sophisticated tilt switch mercury bomb was found at a house in Mungret.

The bomb was designed to be attached underneath a car and explode once the vehicle moved.

A number of men have received long prison sentences following the discovery of the bomb. Also found in that raid was a sterling submachine gun, which had been brought in from England.

In a separate operation yesterday, gardaí from Roxboro located a massive amount of firework rockets at a commercial premises in Eastway Business Park, Ballysimon Road.

“There were enough rockets to fill a van. There have been a number of other finds of similar types of rockets in the south side of the city in recent days. It would appear they were brought in for sale in the Hallowe’en market,” said a garda spokesman.

The rockets are said to be extremely dangerous.

A file is being prepared for the DPP on the Ballysimon find.
