Actresses have vision to end child poverty

IT'S a long way from Ballykissangel to Tanzania, but that's where actress Victoria Smurfit will be spending the start of the new year.

She and fellow actress Pauline McLynn of Father Ted fame will fly to the capital Dar Es Salaam and then begin a 10-hour journey along a dirt track road to the rural region of Kwamtoro.

This is where many of the 7,000 children sponsored by the relief agency World Vision Ireland are based. Ms Smurfit is looking forward to meeting the Tanzanian child she has sponsored for the last five years, but she is still slightly pprehensive.

"It is very difficult to know how prepared we can be for what we are about to discover," she said at the launch yesterday. Ms Smurfit and Ms McLynn are patrons of World Vision Ireland, which collects monthly subscriptions of 22 from donors who agree to sponsor children. More details are available on www.worldvision.ie or by phoning 01 2837800.
