IT'S a long way from Ballykissangel to Tanzania, but that's where actress Victoria Smurfit will be spending the start of the new year.

Actresses have vision to end child poverty

She and fellow actress Pauline McLynn of Father Ted fame will fly to the capital Dar Es Salaam and then begin a 10-hour journey along a dirt track road to the rural region of Kwamtoro.

This is where many of the 7,000 children sponsored by the relief agency World Vision Ireland are based. Ms Smurfit is looking forward to meeting the Tanzanian child she has sponsored for the last five years, but she is still slightly pprehensive.
