Gardaí step up murder manhunt after tracing getaway car
Father of one Eric Cummins, 29, was gunned down in the drive of his home in Oldcourt, Ballincollig, last Saturday night.
Gardaí said yesterday they have traced the gunman’s getaway car to Ballyphehane. Detectives stopped motorists in that part of the city last night. They also mounted simultaneous checkpoints in the Oldcourt area close to where Mr Cummins was shot.
Supt Tom Hayes, leading the investigation, said he hoped to get information from people who may have been in those areas last week and have seen something that could help the investigation. He said the maroon Honda Accord, registration number 94 C 755, found burned out last Sunday in the Waterfall area, was sourced in Ballyphehane by two men last Friday.
He said he is anxious to trace those men and the vehicle’s movements. “One of them is about 5ft 8in or 5ft 9in tall and aged between 24 and 26 years,” Supt Hayes said. “He was wearing dark pants and a Liverpool top. The second man is 5ft 6in, slim, 18 or 19 years of age and was wearing a denim jacket.
“We are making an appeal for anyone who would have seen this car in the Ballyphehane area on Friday, the Greenfields area or in Kilnaglory or Waterfall on Saturday to contact us.”
Gardaí are anxious to trace a person seen acting suspiciously in the Oldcourt area on Friday night. Anyone with information should contact the incident room on 021-4946209.
