THERE were very few compromises on the table yesterday at the first day of negotiations aimed at reforming the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy.

Agriculture Minister Joe Walsh rejected a new set of proposals from EU Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler at the meeting in Luxembourg. However, he believed there was time for compromise and there would be further movement from the commission over the next two days.

The document offered minimal changes to the full set of proposals aimed at cutting links between direct subsidies for farmers and production.
