THE Taoiseach has indicated that Rocco Buttiglione, the controversial Italian candidate for the European Commission, will have to step down to resolve the row over the new commission.

Bertie Ahern, in Rome for the signing of the new EU Constitution, said he did not think reshuffling the cabinet would put an end to the dispute.

Mr Ahern’s comments were echoed by incoming EU Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso, who has finally indicated that he expects to replace some members of the proposed commission.
