Dublin man critical after Spanish holiday attack
Daniel O’Callaghan, aged 24, from Rathmines, Dublin, is in intensive care in a Gran Canaria hospital with severe head injuries.
It is understood Mr O’Callaghan was attacked early on Sunday morning last as he walked home after a night out. He had only arrived on the island the previous day.
A family spokesperson said Mr O’Callaghan had suffered severe brain injuries in the assault and was critically ill in hospital.
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said they were doing what they could to assist the man and his family.
“We can confirm that we are aware of the case and are offering all possible consular assistance through our embassy in Madrid and our honorary consulate in Las Palmas in the Gran Canaria.”
The spokesperson added: “We can not comment on the individual’s case because we have a duty of confidentiality.”
Gran Canaria is one of seven islands that makes up the Canaries.
