IN the deliberations over the timing of this week’s statement, one wonders whether the IRA leadership factored in the fact its members murdered Robert McCartney’s exactly six months ago.

In the weeks following the murder at the end of January, after the five McCartney sisters and Robert’s partner started their battle for justice, the IRA issued an unprecedented three separate statements.
