DENIS DONALDSON’S car was examined yesterday as gardaí stepped up the hunt for the killers of the British spy.

The 56-year-old’s Vauxhall Astra estate was taken away to be forensically checked. Donaldson was seen driving it just before he was gunned down and detectives want to know if anyone else may have been in it around the same time.

Specialists will examine the seats and boot for any fibres that could provide a breakthrough in the murder inquiry. Donaldson, a Sinn Féin official turned British agent, was blasted with a shotgun at his son-in-law’s dilapidated cottage near Glenties, Co Donegal.
