AN INVESTIGATION into the murder of a hackney driver in Co Clare centred last night on a man seen acting suspiciously near the apartment block where the victim lived.

The man was also seen near Ennis Cabs and both sightings were on the night Liam Moloney was murdered.

Gardaí also revealed that the knife used to stab Mr Moloney to death in his car had its blade sharpened recently.

Superintendent John Kerin said the man was acting in a very strange manner and appeared to be concentrating his attention on the Ennis Cabs office in the market - where Mr Moloney picked up fares - and the apartment block at Barrack Street where Mr Moloney lived.

The man was dressed in a heavy, green oilskin waterproof jacket and trousers. He was carrying a lady’s collapsible umbrella.

Supt Kerin said he appeared to be wearing some kind of headgear under the oilskin jacket.

He said although the night was wet, the man was very overdressed in rainwear.

There were sightings of this individual between 7pm and 9pm.

All sightings were near the cab office or the apartment block.

The man was in the 20 to 30 age group and was between 5’10” and 6’ tall.

Supt Kerin said: “He was acting strangely and out of the ordinary. We have got a picture of him from a CCTV system and we are trying to enhance this picture. We are putting a big emphasis on this person at the moment.”

He said they also wanted to speak with a man who was sitting in a light blue car parked near Meeres butcher’s shop on Friday night.

Gardaí are also seeking a red taxi seen near Ruan on Friday night.

They have contacted taxi companies in Limerick and Galway to find out if any of their cabs was in that area at around 8pm on Friday.

Mr Moloney was stabbed to death some time between 7.30pm and 8.20pm on Friday, somewhere between Ennis and Porte House, Ruan, where his body was dumped.

His car was spotted parked behind a pub in Barefield at 8.20pm.
